Happy Easter

Translated into English by a group of translators 8 and 9 class

The Armenian Church is going to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ on April 24.

It is also called Easter. After Christ’s crucifixion and death pious people in the evening took off his body from the cross and put him in the grave closing it with a huge stone. The third day on Sunday morning Maria, Magdalene, Jacob’s mother and Salome went to the grave to anoint Jesus’ body with sweet oils. But they were surprised to see that the stone had been removed and the grave was empty. While they were at a loss, two angels appeared and said,”Don’t look for Jesus among the dead. Those women delivered the news of resurrection to the apostles after which Christ appeared to them.

At Easter people dye eggs. An egg is considered to be the symbol of resurrection and the beginning of new life. The red colour symbolizes that the Christ’s blood was for our salvation. St. Grigor Tatevatci says,” We dye eggs red only at Easter because an egg bares the shape of the sky, the membrane is the air, the white is water, the yolk is the earth and red colour means that the world was gained at the expense of Christ’s blood. ”

Before the holiday resurrection this year on the eve of Easter April 23 is the Twelfth night during which those people who had been lenting come out of it and begin their Easter celebrations. From that day the people greet each other with these words,” Christ has arisen” and the answer is: “Blessed is the resurrection of Christ.”
