What Schliemann Found

Translated into English by a group of translators 8 and 9 class

For some people Heinrich Schliemann is an archaeologist who has found Troy, while for the others he was only born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He was a treasure explorer who has nearly destroyed everything which had been kept by wonder. One thing is indisputable that Schliemann was a real adventurer, full of feelings of an enthusiast who had nothing except the Iliad and the Odyssey by Homer at his disposal. There wasn't money for the expedition either. It can be said that he solved the financial problem first of all.

Schliemann left for America on time where he could make a great fortune and became a real millionaire. After that he left for Minor Asia where he undertook the exploration of HissarlikHill. Schliemann was sure that real Homer Troy must be in deepest part of ground. So he began to dig the land like a mole and pour out everything which seemed to be obstacle to get to the sacred city.

As a result he unwillingly damaged that same Troy which he had overlooked. The city discovered by Schliemann was 1000 years older than Priam's city. Instead he found a cache of gold there and getting afraid of his workers' greediness he moved the gold to a safe place. And till his death Schliemann was sure that he had realized his dream. But that he was mistaken became known only at the end of the 19th century.
