Emma Kirakosyan studies in 10-3 “Media Technologies-Journalism and Foreign Languages” specialized class.

I. What does the saying “Necessity is the mother of invention” mean?

Անհրաժեշտությունը հնարամտություն է ծնում:

Աղքատությունն արհեստ է սովորեցնում:

When one is in need, he/she starts doing something that becomes an invention. He/she does/makes something that meets his/her needs. i.e. difficult situations make people find original and genius solutions.

Write down a list of ten important inventions. Next to each invention write two-three sentences

explaining why these inventions were needed.

1. Medicine.

This was needed because a lot of people were dying and some kind of thing was needed to prevent diseases. This may be one of the most important inventions.

2. The toilet, modern plumbing.

Imagine today’s life without it. It seems a little silly but it’s a fact. Toilet was needed because there was no way out. Without a toilet and plumbing there wouldn’t be the picture of today’s city.

3. The light bulb.

The light bulb was needed because life was developing fast, people were getting very busy and they needed a fast and a cheap source of light.

4. The telephone.

People were traveling, relatives were leaving for other countries to live and they needed something to communicate with each other. So the telephone was invented.

5. The (printing) press.

People needed to be informed about everyday life so the printing press was needed.

6. The computer.

This is the most significant invention of mankind. The computer brought a big wave of new era in the field of technologies and media. It was necessary to invent because the human brain couldn’t keep so much information in it, and an intellectual machine of memory was needed. 7. The television, the radio.

The television and the radio were needed to have a better and more effective means of communication.

8. Vehicles (the automobile, the ship, the plane and so on).

Transportation takes a great place in today’s life: economy, trade, tourism, industry... None of this is spheres could make real progress without vehicles.

9. Photography(the camera).

People experience a lot of great moments in their lives. Many important political, economic, casual events take place in people’s lives and they want them to remain forever. So the camera was invented to enable people to capture the significant and pleasant moments in their lives.

10. Glass.

Without glass our homes would be dark and gloomy. Glass gives us the greenhouse effect.

III. My plans for the future

Using these words and word combinations try to outline your future life:

to leave school, to go to university, to study two foreign languages, to graduate from the

university, to become a translator, to work at an international organization, to establish contacts.

I’m only 14 years old but I already have an imagination about my future life. I’m planning a colorful and a bright life filled with God’s presence, because I’ve grown in a Christian family and I’ve felt Jesus’ love in my life. I guess I’ll become a translator-interpreter but I cannot say what the life will bring on me.  After leaving school I’m planning to go to a university but I can’t orientate myself which university I want to enter. After graduating from the university I’ll look for a job and when I find it, I’ll be happy.  I would like to work at an international organization but if I fail to do it, I won’t give up. I will continue improving my specialization and will try to establish contacts abroad and, why not, find a job abroad. But I am determined  to follow God’s will and go wherever He’ll lead me.
