Eco Lesson in Tbilisi

The translation has been done from Marta Asatryan's blog.

Different groups of our Eco Course have been studying the environmental hot spots in Armenia for already a long period of time. The focus of our attention has been on mining industry for the last several months, and we decided to present this very theme at the Eco Lesson in Tbilisi. The environmental issue of mining industry seems to be only in our country, but when we begin walking along the river, when we see the operating mines and their tailing dams, we realise that the local problems gradually become global. In particularly, the worst consequences of the mines in Teghut and Alaverdi will some day reach Georgia through the Kura River.

Now we are carrying out a joint project Eco Lesson with the School N98 in Tbilisi. The School N98 presented the positive sides of mining industry: precious stones and metals, their signifigance. But when we began presenting our materials in Armenian, Georgian, English and Russian, they got surprised. They were not aware of so many negative consequences mining industry can have, and Georgia will not be able to avoid them either.

When summarizing the Eco Lesson of our joint project we arranged to meet the Georgian group in the north of the country and see the tailing dam, the acid drainage which has started in the Debed River and other environmental problems.
