English Seminar For Non-English Specialists

After the morning general training I decided to be present at today's English seminar conducted by Mr. Yura. The seminar was intended for non-English specialists. I wondered how Mr. Yura would conduct the group the members of which had different levels of language competency. During their previous seminar the group had studied some words and expressions describing people's appearance and characters, as well as learnt how to form questions and give answers to them.

At today's seminar they had to describe and characterize a person whom they knew best. One of the teachers suggested that they should describe a person without giving his or her name. After listening to the description the other teachers had to guess who the person was. That language game was quite interesting and it was a fun to play it.

Emanuel Agjoyan, who was the best at English and participated in the lesson more actively than the others, at the same time was the noisiest and most quarrelsome participant. He not only forbade me to take some videos of their lesson but also was against my taking photos and shooting a video film about the seminar. He was constantly repeating that it was his classroom. He was joking, of course.

Then the members of the seminar made up sentences using comparisons. They connected the English language with other sciences. As for Mathematics, they learnt that if the basement of an object is smaller than its height, we should use the word tall, but if the basement of an object is bigger than its height, we should use the word high. For example: a tall tree, a tall man, a high mountain. Then, the turn of Geography came. We tried to compare the Armenian forests but Emanuel advised us to compare Forests with the regions. For example: The forests of Region Tavush are bigger or smaller than…

I just want to mention that I haven’t seen such a happy lesson for ages. It was obvious that learning English was fun with Mr. Yura. His students learn English in the atmosphere full of joy and gaiety.

At the end of the lesson Mrs. Manik expressed her great attitude towards the lesson by saying: “Why not teach our students in this way? We can conduct lessons and have fun at the same time.”
