Reading books is stylish or it isn't

Fred Sahakyan, Grade 11

Reading books has recently become something like fashion. Some advertisements make reading books fashionable or stylish. For example, the one which you may have noticed: “Reading books is stylish”. So they want to advertise books, but they don't understand that most of our population is not interested in that advertisement and it doesn't have any influence on them. It is not right to make reading books fashionable or stylish. It is all the same; the one who likes reading will read. The one who doesn’t like reading will not read. For me reading books is sometimes compulsory and sometimes it is a good pastime. In other words I sometimes read books purposefully to widen my outlook, and sometimes I read just out of curiosity, but it is all the same; I realize that I develop in both cases. I am made to read books by my mother and my own desire to develop. When everybody in my environment read a book and begin discussing it, I also want to read it in order not to fall behind. It means that the environment also has a big influence on the process of reading. We shouldn’t forget that nowadays reading books is a shameful or undesirable thing.
