Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man At The Bridge

Today the learners of Grade 11 were asked to read Ernest Hemingway's short story The Old Man at the Bridge  and then write a short summary of this very short anti-war story. Here are two of them.

Sanasar Gevorgyan

In this short story Hemingway raised his voice against wars and especially against civil wars. In this story Hemingway talks about an old man, who left his animals in her home town San Carlos and at the age of 77 had to walk twelve kilometres and now he can't move. He left his home town because it was going to be bombed. Then he said that the cat might look after itself, but other animals would die because they wouldn't be able to survive without his care.

When the old man was asked what politics he followed, he ansswered that he followed no politics, he only had been taking care of his animals.

Even though it is a very short story, Hemingway was able to show his humanity and anti-war ideas. I agree with Hemingway. All the problems should be solved peacefully.

Narek Sahakyan

There was a  civil war in Spain in the 1930s. During this war many cities were bombed, a lot of people were killed. People had to leave their homes, properties, and domestic animals because of artillery. The story is about an old man who had left his home, two goats, a cat and a few pegeons in his native town and had to move to Barcelona. He was tired of that pointless war. He couldn't walk any longer, because he had also lost his hope, and life didn't mean anything to him. That situation in Spain can be compared with the situation during the war in Karabakh. Hundreds of thousands of Armenians and Azerbaijanians had to leave their birthplaces, homes, properties, domestic animals and move to other places.
