Aida Grigoryan's Answer to the English Task of the Media Olympiad

 

I am representing Aida Grigoryan’s answer to the task of the English language of the Media Olympiad. She came to our school in September 2011 and chose the specialized 10-3 class “Foreign language-translation and tourism.”

 

I. What does the saying “Necessity is the mother of invention” mean?

Write down a list of ten important inventions. Next to each invention write two-three sentences explaining why these inventions were needed.

The saying “”Necessity is the mother of invention” means that solutions to problems appear when we strongly need solutions to problems. The need is the mother that gives birth to the idea for a solution.

Top 10 inventions

1.      The telephonewas invented in 1875 by Alexander Graham Bell. It helps us to communicate with our friends and relatives that live a long way from us, to organize meetings, to impart news or interesting facts.

2.      The sewing machinewas invented by the French tailor Barthelemy Thimonnier, in 1830. In 1834, Walter Hunt built America's first successful sewing machine. It relieves the work of tailors and in a short time they can sew many things that are necessary for people-dresses, trousers, tablecloths and so on.

3.      The Internetis one of the greatest inventions of all times. Every day we receive a lot of information by internet and it also includes watching videos, reading news, visiting  social networks, communicating with our classmates or teachers.

4.      The airplanewas invented by Wright brothers and even became one of the most important inventions of the 1920s. During the early 20s, airplanes had been used in World War I for reconnaissance and attacks, but its high instability and poor control made it less glamorous than other weapons of World War I.

5.      The steam enginewas central to the industrial revolution. They are still used today to help run nuclear power plants.

6.      Skype was created in 2003 by Niklaz Zennstrom from Sweden and Janus Friis from Denmark. It works by internet and is used in all over the world. The skype helps us to connect with every person in the same or another country by starting video (we can also see him/her) or just by listening his/her voice.

7.      Laptops(also called notebooks) are small personal computers designed for mobile use. In 1981, the Osborne Computer Corporation released the first laptop computer at a market price of $1795. The notebook is very comfortable to use at home, at school as it can have Internet, necessary programs and is smaller than modern computers.

8.      In 1902, the first modern electrical air conditioning unit was inventedby Willis Carrierin Buffalo, New York. Air conditioning is the removal of heat from indoor air for thermal comfort. In another sense, the term can refer to any form of cooling, heating, ventilationor disinfection.

9.      The electric guitar was invented in 1931 and became a necessity as jazz musicians sought to strengthentheir sound. Since then, the electric guitar has become the most important instrument in popular music. It served as a major component in the development of rock and rolland other genres of music.

10.  The first camerainventionto capture a permanent image was created by Joseph Niepce. In nowadays the cameras are very popular and everybody strives to have it. It helps us to memorize photos with our relatives, friends or just photographing nice sceneries, famous buildings wherever we are.

 

II.  Writing advertisements

Try to advertise these things so that you might have as many buyers as possible:

Shoes, a two-room flat, a science fiction book.

You may use pictures to illustrate what you are advertising.

1. It's already winter, time to buy presents for New Year and ''Armeno'' Trading Center offers you a great range of modern shoes for women and men. And finally...sale for 30%. Hurry up, make the best present for your dears. Address: Kievyan Str, 30.

2. A two-room flat for sale in the North of Manchester with a living-room, bed-room, kitchen, bathroom and a balcony with a panoramic view. There is a divan-bed, two armchairs, a TV set and a coffee table in the living room. To the right of the divan-bed there is a book-case full of books. There are two beds, a desk, a toilet table, a chair and a wardrobe in the bed-room. There is also permanent running water, an air conditioner and a musical center in the flat. The price is conventional.

3. Interested in science? Love to read books about the Earth or our planet? Here is an interesting science fiction book for teenagers. In this book you can find a lot of significant themes, important answers that will help you to improve your knowledge. The book coasts €5.

III. My plans for the future

Using these words and word combinations try to outline your future life:

to leave school, to go to university, to study two foreign languages, to graduate from the university, to become a translator, to work at an international organization, to establish contacts.

I study in the 10-th form at ''MkhitarSebastatsi'' educational complex but after three years I will leave my school. I intendto go to university and study two foreign languages there: English and Spanish. I love these two languages very much and every day I do a lot of translations, read interesting news in English and Spanish. After graduating from the university I want to go to Spain, Barcelona and become a translator at an international organization. I also want to see the sights of the city, the famous works by Antoni Gaudi.
